Join a conversation with filmmaker Zach Ingrasci, editor and co-producer Alejandro Valdés-Rochin, and mental health practitioner Elena Zarandona — who works with adolescents who have suffered similar hardships while involved in the immigration process.

Alejandro Valdés-Rochin

Originally from Mexico, Alejandro is an award-winning documentary editor whose collaborations have released theatrically and digitally across National Geographic, PBS, Al Jazeera, Red Bull TV and Discovery. Alejandro’s recent credits include Maxima (Festival Favorite – Hot Docs 2019) and Science Fair (Festival Favorite – Sundance 2018). He is the Editor and Co-Producer of Five Years North.
Elena Zarandona
Therapist @Zarandona Counseling and Assessment Services LLC
Also originally from Mexico, Elena is a bilingual mental health practitioner with over 10 years of experience working with undocumented immigrants. She specializes in Couples Therapy, Individual Therapy for Adults and adolescents transitioning into adulthood, and in evaluations for the immigration process such as the I-601 Waiver, VAWA, U-Visa, T-Visa, and Asylum. She works on a regular basis with clients who have suffered similar hardships to the ones seen in Five Years North.
Zach Ingrasci
Filmmaker, Director & Co-Founder @Optimist
Zach Ingrasci is a director and the co-founder of Optimist. Best known for directing the documentaries Living On One Dollar, Salam Neighbor, and The Undocumented Lawyer, Zach’s films have been released by Netflix, Amazon Prime, National Geographic, and HBO. Most recently, he directed the feature documentary, Five Years North, which won the Grand Jury Prize at DOC NYC. Five Years North is also a finalist for the 2021 duPont-Columbia Awards for Outstanding Journalism. Every Optimist film is accompanied by an impact campaign to create measurable outcomes. His projects have raised over $91.5 million for the films’ causes to support poverty alleviation and refugee education.
