NEPM Book Club: 'Horse'

The next NEPM Book Club meeting is set for Thursday, April 27, and we’re reading “Horse” by Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks. The story begins when an art historian pulls a 19th century painting of a racehorse out of the trash and a young osteologist finds a skeleton in an attic. It travels back to 1850 Kentucky, where an enslaved groom and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. It takes us to 1954 New York, where a gallery owner known for modern art becomes obsessed with a old equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance. “A confident novel of racing and race . . . with tender precision, ‘Horse’ shows us history in flux,” The Guardian said in a review.
