Work It Out Wombats!, a new PBS animated series for kids ages 3-6 and premiering on Monday, Feb. 6, focuses on computational thinking in preschool and kindergarten. Computational thinking is a creative way to help children solve problems and complete tasks in more organized ways, using a toolkit of skills from computer science. It can be taught without a computer, through play-based activities that are children-directed or teacher designed, coupled with targeted lesson plans.

She’s written and developed a variety of free print, website, and app content for children, teachers, parents, librarians, out-of-school-time educators, and home visiting organizations,. In addition to Work It Out Wombats!, she’s created hands-on activities and other resources for PEEP and the Big Wide World, Curious George, FETCH!, and Design Squad. Borgna has a BA in English from Vassar College and an M. Phil from Trinity College, Dublin. She’s enjoys volunteering as a tutor for both children and adults. Kerry Zagarella (Kindergarten Teacher @Winthrop Elementary, Ipswich, MA) Kerry graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a BA in Education and Theater. Combining these interests, Kerry earned her M.Ed. in the Creative Arts and Learning Program at Lesley University. Supporting a dynamic classroom that values the unique contributions of each child is a hallmark of her career. Kerry is a life-long teacher of young children as well as a devoted leader in the field of Early Childhood Education. Her recent work secured grants for a local group of early childhood educators engaging in shared professional development and programming. The group, Play is the Way, promotes the critical need to view play as a powerful learning tool in gaining academic skills. In addition, Kerry co-founded This School is Your School, a professional development team that examines equity and social justice issues in school culture. Kerry is a performance poet, writer and enjoys sharing art created with found objects. Lina Lopez-Ryan (Elementary Math Specialist @Ipswich Public Schools, Ipswich, MA) Lina has been an elementary public school teacher for over 15 years in Massachusetts. She started her educational career at the Beverly School for the Deaf, in Beverly, MA, and has taught first, second, and third grades in Ipswich, MA. She holds a M.Ed. in Elementary Education from Lesley University, and recently completed her second Masters in Teaching Mathematics and Math Leadership from Mount Holyoke College. In her new role as an elementary math specialist, she is eager to collaborate and empower teachers as they advocate for equity and access in their classrooms.
